Frequently Asked Questions

Documentaries very in scope by a huge amount. A 5 - 10 minute short documentary is going to be completed much quicker than a 90-minute feature-length film. A short doc can be completed in roughly 1 to 3 months. A feature-length film may take 12 to 24 months to complete.

Nope! In fact, we'd prefer to develop the story together. That way we can provide helpful advice during the story development stage that will benefit the film down the road.

A documentary can be as long or short as you want. Generally, what dictates the length of a film is the story depth and complexity, and the resources available for production. A 90-minute film needs a lot more content and deeper topics than a 10-minute film.

We find that the sweet spots are around 5 - 10 minutes for short films exploring a simple topic.

For a topic that requires more depth and has the budget for at least a few days of filming, then 20 - 40 minutes is a good length.

For the biggest topics with multiple characters and many angles to explore the story from, 60 - 120 minutes is best. These projects usually require many production days and interviews with many characters.

Docu-series have also become very popular for stories that are bigger than one film.

Documentaries can vary massively in scope and scale. A 5 - 10 minute documentary might cost under $10,000. A feature-length film could go well over $300,000.

Our filmmaking style is very non-invasive. We like to capture things as they happen naturally. If you are interested in having a documentary created, chances are it's about something you are an expert in. We find that when we film people doing what they are passionate about, their nerves about being on camera disappear relatively quickly.

We conduct interviews in a natural conversational style that feels more like two people getting to know each other than an interview.

The strongest documentaries often involve real people facing meaningful challenges, pursuing ambitious goals, or working on something that impacts the community.

Unique to our style, are stories about people doing hard things for deeply intrinsic reasons. We like to explore the things that people are passionate about and why they continue on even when things get hard.

One thing that makes Wide Range Multimedia unique is our experience in delivery and distribution. Many other video agencies are done when the film is done.

We can help you distribute your film in some of the following ways,

  • Live screenings
  • Online streaming platforms
  • Physical media like DVDs
  • Company websites
  • Social media
  • Fundraising campaigns
  • Film festivals
  • Conferences or presentations

This is partly up to you. During the development and pre-production phase, we will want you to be heavily involved to make sure we are understanding your vision and to use your resources to connect us to the right people for the film.

We can take it from there if you'd like. During the post-production phase, we'll share a rough cut of the film with you and incorporate your feedback before finalizing the film.

Some short documentaries can be filmed entirely in one day. These films are usually under 15 minutes long. For bigger projects, we'll need more days to capture enough content.

That's good news! Sensitive topics are what documentaries excel at. Only the longer length of documentary films allows the time to properly explore sensitive topics.

Our approach to filmmaking goes beyond surface level. We like to explore topics deeply and highlight all the nuances of complex and sensitive topics.
